Laptop Mic Dead After Upgrade Laptop Mic Dead After Upgrade. I recently replaced a hard drive and RAM then loaded a fresh copy of Windows 10 on my laptop. The mic was dead. I followed these steps and the troubleshooter showed me two mics(!?). I selected the other mic, made it the default, then ran the troubleshooter, and voila! I have recording capabilities once again! Excellent solution!
