GBfirst the very bad news .. first the very bad news ... a simply click gives academia.eu access to all of your google contacts!! BEWARE giving your contacts away as it can be used maliciously. second... endless 'recommendations' that in effect become spam by sheer numbers. Occasionally i do come across an interesting paper, but i have to wade through so much else to find it. NOTE THE REPLY. NO DENIAL THAT TAKING YOUR CONTACTS HAPPENS! just a curious 'sorry you had this experience'. well of course i had this experience, thats IS the academis.eu experience they have set up!

GBI am absolutely outraged that I have… I am absolutely outraged that I have been charged £166.80 for a Premium subscription. I mistakenly signed up for Academia Premium last year (at the time it was £69). In that time, most of the mentions have been for another academic with a similar name to me, so pretty much the service has been rubbish. I have just looked through my emails and have located an email sent on 8 March, which advised me that subcription charges would be going up, but there is absolutely no option in the email to cancel this. Now, I have just tried to log in to my account and it says there is a problem, so I cannot even cancel the subscription to ensure this never happens again. I will take this further if Academia edu do not refund my subscription. I am appalled that this sort of company has sway in the academic community.

CAWatch out for this scam Watch out for this scam! $169 Australian dollars taken from my PayPal account today, I had the genuine impression that my "upgrade" was for the cost of $5, without agreeing to further deductions. Additionally the " mentions" of my work - all false! An organisation totally lacking in transparency and integrity. I've logged my complaint with them - no response, 12 hours later, considering legal action now.

GBhorrible The website fails to correctly parse author names from uploaded PDFs. The exported citations are missing many co-author names, which may confuse referencing software and affect citation counts - creating opposite effect of what academia.edu claims to achieve. Answering Academia: The support team suggested that I should get all my co-authors onto academia.edu, and ONLY THEN the citation would show the correct information. This seems like a dubious marketing strategy! I would suggest everyone to AVOID ACADEMIA.

CHAbsolute scam Absolute scam. I made an acount to follow interesting academic literature. Instead I received daily mails concerning somebody mentioning my works in their research. Quite impossible, since none of my works is qualitative nor connected to my account. Nevertheless Academia.edu tries to sell you a subscription to view non-existing mentions.
